Are admittedly my favorite type of painting. The juxtaposition of man-made objects with natural ones appeals to me. One is all straight lines and geometric shapes, the other all curves and sinuousness. Sometimes they seem to be in harmony with each other, other times in opposition.

There is a modest waterfall at the end of the reflecting/sculpture pond at Rat’s restaurant near the Grounds for Sculpture. This restaurant has a great outdoor patio overlooking the pond and is a lovely place to spend some time.

In the town of Ocean Gate next door to a marina is this unusual multi-story building at the edge of the bay. It seems to be abandoned and the property is noted as a bird sanctuary. I don’t know what the building was originally used for.

Interesting that this steel mill, no longer functioning and in the center of town, has been left there as a reminder of times past.

This painting is a near copy of a painting I liked in my art magazine. The layout is similar to the original, but the brushwork and colors are more mine. This artist has a rather loose style which I admired.

A factory that I regularly pass has this elaborate ventilation equipment on the roof. It intrigued me to see all these mechanicals that appear to be unused at present.

There is a somewhat wild beach on the Vandenberg Air Force grounds that daughter Caroline took us to one day. Very different from the flat groomed beaches we have here in New Jersey.

The French restaurant at "Grounds for Sculpture”, not far from my house, has a lovely pond filled with water lilies. This painting is a somewhat fanciful interpretation of those lilies.

In my town, which was originally more rural, a small number of chicken coops remain. This coop looked like it was about to be knocked down (or fall down) to be replaced by a housing development. I wanted to capture its image before that happened.

Fellow artist and friend Peter Hunt and I went sketching one day. I did a sketch or two and took some photos. Eventually, I did a painting of the subject.

This little building is on my friend’s property. It was part of an old motel built in the style of the dwarf’s houses in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

One can’t always get out of doors. Occasionally a collection of objects, whether discovered or arranged will interest me and I will look for my paints. It also helps the process that things don’t move around much and the lighting stays constant.

It is great to paint what one sees. It is also nice to paint what one can’t see, but only imagine. For a number of years I was working in the surrealistic style. It still has considerable attraction for me and I hope to return to it from time to time. Regular life these days seems more than a little surrealistic to me.
